EVENT DETAILS

Learn to Play Hong Kong Mah Jong

Whether you've seen Mah Jong played by friends, heard about it online, or have always wanted to learn, this class is designed to help you get started with confidence.

Hong Kong Mah Jong is a fast-paced, social version of the classic tile game that combines strategy, observation, and a little luck. During this learn-to-play session, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of the game, including tile identification, the flow of play, how to build winning hands, and common strategies. You'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice as you learn.

Our goal isn't just to teach the rules. We want you to leave feeling comfortable enough to join future games and become part of our growing Mah Jong community.

Who Should Attend

This event is designed specifically for beginners.

No previous Mah Jong experience is required. Whether you're completely new to the game or have only watched others play, we'll start with the basics and move at a comfortable pace.

Event Experience

The session begins with an introduction to the tiles and core rules before moving into guided gameplay. Rather than listening to a long lecture, you'll spend most of your time learning by playing with help from experienced instructors.

As the class progresses, you'll practice drawing and discarding tiles, calling sets, recognizing scoring opportunities, and completing winning hands. Questions are encouraged throughout the event, and our instructors will help explain not only what to do but why certain decisions make sense.

Many participants leave ready to join our weekly open play sessions, where they can continue practicing and meet other local Mah Jong players.

The Fair Game Perspective

At Fair Game, we see learn-to-play events as one of the best ways to begin a new hobby. Walking into an established game can feel intimidating when you don't know the rules, but learning alongside other beginners creates a comfortable environment where everyone is there for the same reason.

Mah Jong is a wonderfully social game. While there is plenty of strategy to explore, one of the biggest reasons people keep coming back is the community that forms around the table. Whether you're looking for a new hobby, a regular social activity, or simply want to learn something new, this class is a great place to start.
